The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various Government led community service activities & programmes. The primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. ‘Education through Service’ is the purpose of the NSS.  The National Service  Scheme was implemented on September 24, 1969, during Gandhiji’s birth centenary, with two objectives: Service with Education and Personality Development with Education. The project started with 47000 volunteers at 41 universities in the country and which has now spread over 657 Universities and 51 +2 Councils/Directorates, covering 20,669 Colleges/ Technical Institutions and 11,988 Senior Secondary School. Since inception , over 7.4 crore students have benefitted from NSS. In the state of Karnataka more than 6.40 lakh volunteers are enrolled in more than 4000 educational institutions.  The National Service Scheme cell is Independent in Govt. of Karnataka and works, under the control of the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Youth Empowerment & Sports Department, M.S. Building, Bangalore.  The State NSS Officer and Ex-Officio Joint Secretary to Government is the sole one in charge of the National Service Scheme.  In each University and Directorate, there will be a Programme Coordinator who will look after the NSS Activities and will take part in the successful implementation of the programs.  73 Programme Coordinators and 4000 Programme Officers are involved in implementing the NSS activities of 69 universities and 4 Directorates in the State.  In the scheme, the Govt. of India has allotted the strength of volunteers is 3,21,000 are in Regular and 1,60,500  for Special Camp Activities The total grant for the volunteers will be released by the Central Government only.  Both Regular Activities and Special Camp activities will be held as per the guidelines of the Central Govt. 2006 Manual.  Under the Self Finance Scheme (SFU) 2790 Units covering about 279000 NSS volunteers also have been enrolled.  The state government is granting special grants for the activities of the national project, which is unique in the country. Apart from the central government grant, the state government of Karnataka has raised as a special grant. Implementation of Amruth Samudaya Abhivruddi Yojene, State republic parade, State Youth Festival, 10 National Integration Camps, Environment Program, Dr. BR Ambedkar, Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi’s Contemporary Programs organized by NSS are the Ideal programme for implementation.

The NSS Badge : Proud to Serve the Nation

All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy.

1.The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.

2.Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.

3.The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

NSS UAS Bangalore

The University has adopted the National Service Scheme at the University level and across all constituent colleges as follows:

1. College of Agriculture, GKVK, Bangalore
2. College of Agricultural Engineering, GKVK, Bangalore
3. College of Agriculture, Mandya
4. College of Sericulture, Chintamani
5. College of Agriculture, Hassan
6. College of Agriculture, Chamarajanagar

The main goal of NSS is to nurture patriotism, and inculcate service Moto among the students. NSS Coordinator at the main campus and NSS Programme officer at each of the sub campuses organize the defined and identified mandated programs.  The UG students undergo non-credit NSS course during I and II year.  As part of the course, the students attend 10 days camp in rural areas and render community service. Other notable NSS programmes during recent times include ‘Fit India Freedom Run-2020’ program to encourage fitness and Vigilance Programme on Anti-Corruption week to create awareness about corruption and bring in honesty among the people. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore,  NSS unit has been established in the year 1993-94 with motto or watch-word of the National Service Scheme i.e., NOT ME BUT YOU. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole. Goal of NSS is Education through Community Service and Community Service through Education. The NSS Unit regularly organizes various students’ centric activities and main emphasis is laid on personality development of students through community participation. Students are involved in “Shramadana” in the campus thus contributing for keeping campus neat and tidy by clearing plastic and weeds. The unit conducts National and State level students’ activities such as Regular Camps, National Integration Camp (NIC), Yoga day, Anti-Tobacco day, Sadbhavana day, Fit India Freedom run, Republic day parade, (State and Central), Adventure camps as per guidelines of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India and Govt. of Karnataka. Annual NSS Special camps are organized at the villages regularly. NIC gives insight into folk culture, leads to exchange of culture and helps to build confidence in youth to bring in National Integration. Programmes on awareness about rain water harvesting, value addition of agricultural produce, social evils, capacity building of farmers on pests and disease control are organized in the camps and The Volunteer Database Scheme is now being implemented in My Bharat portal  http://mybharat.gov.in  besides the Central and State Government led community activities.
